Title panel: A cartoon volcano screaming with mouth wide open and hands raised in fists. Panel 1: Three cartoon volcanoes, a farting cinder cone and a steaming shield volcano look askance at a screaming stratovolcano. Text reads, “Scientists have noticed that some volcanoes 'scream' before they explode.” Panel 2: A speech bubble reading, “Cree-ee-ee-ee-eek” is shared by the screaming volcano and an opening door. Text reads, “The 'screaming' is caused by hundreds of small earthquakes that combine to create what’s called a harmonic tremor. It’s like a creaky door - hundreds of creaks, caused by the metal pieces rubbing together, making up one big creak.” Panel 3: A diagram of a magma moving up from a magma chamber to the volcano above. Text reads, “In a volcano, the screams are caused by magma - which contains a lot of rock - rubbing against the Earth’s crust as it’s forced upwards.” Panel 4: A map of Alaska with the location of Redoubt Volcano marked. Text reads, “Volcanologists working in Alaska recorded the screams of Redoubt Volcano. A scream is drawn emanating from the marked volcano. They noticed that the screams get higher and higher pitched - until it explodes.” Panel 4: A series of drawings shows the progression of the cartoon volcano. First, with it's full mouth pursed closed, “As pressure builds, the earthquakes get smaller and occur more frequently.” Second, the volcano's mouth is open and the text reads, “The scream gets high and high pitched...” Third, an innocent-looking volcano with cheeks full reads, “...then the screams pause... although magma is still moving, maybe.” And finally, the cartoon volcano is letting out a scream and the text reads, “Then the volcano EXPLODES!”
